Well, the webshops are fully loaded with innumerable Halloween-themed gadgets and it looks like there really are a few things that cannot be "halloweened." But the very funny part is that a lot of new gadgets are designed every now and then and many of them are constructed in a rather serious disregard of true functionality issues. Such is the case with the Skull Beer Funnel, a Halloween drinking gadget that looks cool but comes with a big "why."
Now, first of all, this gadget has been designed with the beer drinkers in mind – there are many people out there who are well-acquainted with drinking a lot of beer and they'll most likely see things the same way.
Beer at parties is all about drinking and never about tasting, sensing intricate aromatic details and pretty much nothing from what a professional beer taster would think of. Beer is there to be consumed in an either responsible manner or in a (mostly always) abusive one; and since when it comes to drinking beer there are so little things that matter, why make this altogether pleasant and easy process harder?
Beer comes in bottles, cans or kegs; you open the containing device and let the fluid drain inside you, via your throat; a lot of fluid, with speed and – if you're with familiar guys – a burp. There's no sipping (that's blasphemous), no drinking like a bird, whatsoever.
Now, what's with the Skull Beer Funnel? It's fun, and that's obvious: it looks like a very realistic human skull and the attached hose looks very much like the spine, unless it is very, very flexible and ends up in a mouthpiece with a no-joke gauge. The operation is simple, in a way: open beer, put hose in mouth, pour, swallow, burp. OK, the burping isn't mandatory.
Next come the "whys"; since you have to hold the skull with one hand and the end of the hose with the other one... this means that somebody else must pour. And this isn't at all comfortable. You can't keep the nozzle between your teeth and the funnel doesn't come with a fleshless arm to hold it. You need three hands to enjoy the benefits of Halloween beer abuse, and this is very unpleasant, if you ask any decent beer drinker.
The Skull Beer Funnel is indeed a cool-looking and somewhat useful drinking gadget, at least for the Halloween night. The
$13.99 price is absolutely cool too (my glow-in-the-dark skeleton tie was more expensive).
But it's junior league.
