Report includes technical fact sheet from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

A report from Japan’s Macotakara, which has leaked accurate information in the past, cites a “reliable” source as saying that Apple’s iPhone 6 will sport rounded edges and curved glass overlaying the display.

A sketchy rumor regardless of how you view it, the curved-glass tidbit is not at all new, but the latest such claim seems to add more weight to this unconfirmed specification. The design of the next-generation iPhone is said to closely resemble that of an iPhone 5 wearing a SQUAIR Curvavious Bumper.

A list of potential technical specifications is provided in the report. Supplied by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the breakdown includes processor type (A8 SoC), display resolution (1334x750) and pixel density (as high as 401 PPI for the 4.7-inch model), NFC support, LTPS display technology, 6.5-7-millimeter metal enclosure, and sapphire crystal overlaying the display.

Nothing out of the ordinary, except for the curved glass claim, which may or may not turn out to be accurate. KGI refrains from talking about design, and therefore can’t corroborate this particular aspect.

The report seems to draw similarities between the upcoming iPhone 6 and the Galaxy lineup of smartphones from Samsung, though Apple wouldn’t be caught dead implementing design features that would seem borrowed from the Korean giant, especially given the two companies’ ongoing legal spat over product resemblances.

However, considering that all smartphones have pretty much the same form factor, it’s not out of the question to see at least some minor design elements ending up being shared by the two lines of handsets from Apple and Samsung. Plus, Apple already has a cool design to draw inspiration from in the latest generation of iPod touch players.

Speaking of which, the California tech juggernaut might actually phase out the large portable players, leaving the all-purpose iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in place for those interested in consuming iTunes content. With smartphones becoming ubiquitous, devices like the iPod touch are becoming less and less relevant.

The first planned Apple event for 2014 appears to be WWDC in June, though Tim Cook still has time to issue invitations for something slated in May. Among the rumored new products to come out of Apple this year are a refreshed TV box and the elusive iWatch.

iPhone 6 is also on the table for unveiling in 2014, but it is unclear when the company wants to make the announcement – WWDC or later, in fall.
