Apple will use a 20nm processor manufactured by TSMC, sources say

A report from Taiwan citing sources from Apple’s upstream supply chain claims that a larger-size iPhone packing an all-new processor is coming in May 2014, months earlier than expected.

The DigiTimes report includes some tidbits on the company’s plans with a larger iPad, as well as this following piece of info:

“In addition to tablets, Apple is also rumored to be planning a larger size iPhone for May 2014, using a 20nm processor manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the sources noted.”

The Cupertino giant usually launches new iPhones in fall, but that’s only in recent years. Before the iPhone 4S unveiling in 2011, it used to announce its newest iPhones at the Worldwide Developers Conference, which usually takes place in the June-July timeframe.

Even if Apple goes back to its old habit of announcing new iPhones in summer, the DigiTimes report still makes it hard to believe the company will have two events so close to one another. And I doubt Apple plans to shift the WWDC ceremony to spring starting next year.
