Plasma is threatened

At the beginning of LCD technology, no one expected that this type of solutions will reach gargantuan sizes. But times passed, LCDs grew and here we are today in front of a gigantic 65 inch TV which incorporates this solution.

The author of this technological wonder is Sharp Corp., which announced Friday that it will start retailing the product in the second half of this year.

Sharp had already in its lineup a 45 inch model, but it seems it wasn't enough for the Japanese company which targets with this new product the market of flat TVs with diagonals above 40 de inch, still dominated by the plasma and rear-projection models.

The first company affected by this launch is Matsushita which is currently selling 65 inch plasma TVs. The price for Sharp's LCD is 1.68 million yens ($15,520), whereas Matsushita's product has a price tag of 1.85 million yens.

Technically speaking, it seems LCD TVs are superior to plasma ones (Sharp's 65 inch TV is capable of 1.920x1.080 pixels, whereas Matsushita's plasma TV displays only 1.366x768 pixels), which means that if plasma TV producers don't change their price policies, it's likely that in a short time LCD will replace plasma technology.
