Size Does Matter in Mac vs. PC Face-Off

I'm just going to say that size does matter when it comes down to the now traditional Mac vs. PC face-off and leave it at that. At the bottom of this article you will be able to find embedded the latest release out of Microsoft's Laptop Hunters series of video advertisements. This one features Matt and Olivia and the “little guy.” The three are of course hunting for a laptop for under $700. And, as it was the case with previous Laptop
Hunters ads, the future PC buyers do stop and take a quick look at Apple computers before dismissing Macs as a potential machine tailored to their needs.

In previous videos Microsoft has downplayed Apple Macs for delivering an inferior price/value ratio compared to PCs, for insufficient hardware resources and for a smaller level of performance. This time around, Olivia, of course it had to be Olivia, exclaims: “the Mac is too small.” Then she goes on to say: “$1,000?” To which Matt adds: “for under $700 we can't get a Mac.” And they're off to buy a PC.

The focus continues to be the price. Microsoft simply can't get enough when it comes down to driving home the idea that Windows computers are cheaper than Macs. And in the end, the Redmond company has got a winning message. The global economic crisis has made all consumers watch their spendings carefully, if not even cutting them down considerably. Advertising better or at least equivalent value at a cheaper price is a marketing approach that is bound to resonate with consumers everywhere.

“This time Matt and Olivia are looking for a laptop under $700 and "Windows Photo Galley gets a high five in this ad and eventually they walk out with a HP dv7,” revealed Microsoft's M3 Sweatt. “As they say, you can't go wrong with happy families, babies and puppies in commercials, and this one is just a step away from that ultimate level of cuteness. The bumper at the end of the commercial: 'We’re a PC, because we can share photos with this little guy'.”

i am in complete disbelief. at first i was upset with the pc world for not having any response to the "im a mac" adds that ran for years unanswered. now that i see their response i am more horrified and embarrassed.

seriously. what are these people thinking? are you telling me that focus groups thought that advise from an 11 year old or a lady who cant even wash her hair was an excellent marketing technique? this is probably the least offensive of the commercials since it doesn't make me want to run out and buy a mac.

i just can not believe that given the awesome resources that are available to microsoft and pc manufacturers that this is what is produced.

was this part of the anti-trust settlement, that the parketing for windows and pc's would have to suck so bad that people would feel compelled to try another operating system?

i mean the mac ads made me want to punch that snide "im soo much cooler than you" *** in the face, but these ads make me want to find the *** who thought this was a good idea and find out who their target market for these ads is.

please get a reputable marketing/ branding firm to work for you. this is bush-league.

Microsoft doesn't make PC's. Microsoft makes the OS. The OS runs the computer. Does anyone else find it odd that Microsoft always avoids comparing their OS to Apple's?
