Six New UK Ads

Apple released half a dozen new Mac ads for UK

Apple has renewed its line of ads, with six UK additions, three of which completely new. The ads are called Naughty Step, Magic, Out of the Box, Court, Accident
and Network and they raise the number of UK 'Get a Mac' ads to twelve (the previous six are titled Office at Home, Restarting, Virus, Trust Mac, Tentacle and Pie Chart).

I've just watched the ads and read some comments. Most comments said the ads are disappointing, but I really enjoyed these new ones, more than the previous. Still, I think the Japanese ads are by far the funniest, perhaps because I don't understand any Japanese.

Choosing the characters proved to be the most difficult aspect for Apple's creation team. I read a lot of opinions about the ads and I've grown to the conclusion that the UK actors were Apple's worst pick.

David Mitchell and Robert Webb perform in The Peep Show, which casts Mitchell as an affable and good-natured, compared to the superior wit of Webb. The British seem to like Mitchell much more, and Webb's character is considered smug and arrogant.

While in Japan Apple faced issues caused by cultural differences, in UK people just don't like Mac. After the airing of the ad campaign, YouGov's BrandIndex revealed that the UK consumer buzz around Apple had dropped a lot. The consumer perception of the Apple brand took a fall, as YouGov's BrandIndex surveys have shown.

I'm assuming Apple wanted to "save the day" with these six new ads, but I really can't see the use. If British audiences didn't find the first set funny, I don't see how these six will change anything.

You can see the ads on Apple's UK website. I really enjoyed them, particularly Court and Out of the Box. We'll just have to see if there's a change in audience reaction to the campaign. Stay posted for more information on the matter.
