Three sites, policiafederal.gov.br, dpf.gov.br, and pf.gov.br, belonging to the Brazilian Federal Police, have been targeted by Anonymous hackers and their supporters with distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks.

According to Havittaja, one of the hackers that coordinated the attacks, the sites have been down for more than 7 hours.

One hour ago, the hacker told the participants in the attack to cease fire, but at press time the sites were still down, which may indicate that the large number of packets sent their way in the past few hours had a devastating impact.

Anonymous supporters were pointed to DDOS tools that can be utilized even by users who don’t know much about hacking. They were simply given a link to a website that automatically started sending large number of packets at the targets.

The technique has been used by Anonymous after Megaupload was closed down, when internauts from all over the world took down a number of high-profile websites, including ones of US authorities and anti-piracy outfits.
