This is merely a legal restructuring of the family

Kody Brown and his 4 wives and their impressive family that also includes 17 children in total became household names thanks to TLC and the reality show Sister Wives, which is still airing as of the time of writing. However, some things have changed recently.

Kody and his Sister Wives describe themselves as a plural family, but legally, he’s only married to one of them. Until recently, that was Meri, who was his first Sister Wife and his legal wife too for almost 20 years.

Meri is no longer Kody’s wife but she is still involved in his life, and will continue to remain a Sister Wife.

Surprising divorce

ET has obtained confirmation that Kody quietly filed for divorce from Meri just recently, and that shortly after the divorce was pronounced final, he and Robyn, his youngest wife, were legally hitched.

Despite headlines promising details into the “shocking” divorce, there was really no drama involved in the decision, the family says in a statement to the same media outlet. This was more a practical move that will benefit Robyn’s 3 children from a previous marriage.

This way, they will have insurance and other legal benefits, which is something they would not get if Robyn stayed on as Sister Wife and not legal spouse.

“We have chosen to legally restructure our family. We made this decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support,” the statement reads.

A different, often controversial lifestyle

Besides Meri and Robyn, Kody is also husband to Janelle and Christine. With Robyn’s 3 children from the previous marriage, they have a total of 17 children, raised in an environment of peace and love, according to a strict schedule of visitations and sleepovers.

The Browns aren’t your typical family but then again, is that really a bad thing? Though they’re often criticized for their out of the ordinary lifestyle (Kody in particular, for taking 4 women as wives), they never come across on TV as anything but supportive of each other, understanding and kind.

As they once said on a televised appearance, being part of a plural family means there’s more love to go around: the more Wives and children, the more love, the more people you can turn to and ask for help at your hour of need. Sure, Kody occasionally gets their names mixed up, but if they’re happy and aren’t harming anyone with their choices, that should be all that matters.
