Siri is a success on the iPhone and iPad and everyone believes it should be ported to the Mac and Apple TV. It appears that Apple has thought of that and they have already filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office, as revealed by patentlyapple.

Sure, you think Siri can tell you what time it is and how the weather is. Well, think again. The Siri Apple wants will go well beyond that. The patent is not just a shallow presentation of Siri on the Mac, but it shows what Apple has in mind regarding the interface and the features the intelligent assistant will get.

Apple thinks Siri can help the user interact with the interface and system functions. The user will enable Siri by performing a predetermined gesture on the trackpad. The pictures that came with this patent application are self-explanatory.

Imagine you can use Siri to sort items in a spreadsheet by date, or dictate an email after you started to type a few words. Another use case would be related to setting the priority for an email message after you are done dictating the text.

Apple also describes how you could be opening a movie in a window and then ask Siri to play that video in full screen or enabling an output to play it on an external monitor.

Siri could be used as a way to sort documents. You can ask your digital assistant to sort a bunch of documents by date and after that merge them into a single document. Siri could compare two different documents and then the user can ask her to print five copies of each file.

When you are editing a document, you could be asking Siri to find a picture online and insert it in the document. In Finder.app you can ask Siri to create a new folder and add some files to that.

According to the same source, Apple also revealed how Siri could be used in a restaurant ordering and reservation system. For example, the user can activate the digital assistant by saying "Hey, Siri" and the voice trigger will listen to any commands. This patent covers the ways Siri could be integrated in apps created by Apple or third-party apps with similar functionality.

Siri will work with some 3rd-party apps when iOS 8 hits. Apple has announced that the digital assistant will be capable to recognize a song using Shazam and purchase iTunes content.
