Assistant now aims to prevent suicides by calling the authorities

If you told Siri yesterday that you wanted to kill yourself, the assistant would only provide you with contact information for the suicide prevention helpline. Today, it offers to call them up for you.

Granted, when the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline picks up the phone it’s still your job to tell them you’re feeling a bit under the weather, but I’ll admit Siri is doing her bit pretty admirably these days.

Next thing you know, Siri will read your brain waves, discover some nasty thoughts, call the FBI behind your back, activate Location Services (even though you specifically set it to Off), and scramble Maps to misdirect you to a dead end for the feds to find you and cuff you face down on the concrete.

Jokes aside, I’m pretty sure counseling with Siri is the last thing on a suicidal person’s mind, but I guess it does lend a helping hand when you’re calling for someone else.
