One of the most solid couples in showbiz, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, have just become parents for the first time. Their son was born to a surrogate mother on December 25 and is in perfect health, it has emerged.

The iconic singer, who’s been married to David since 2005 after more than a decade together, has tried adopting before, but eventually had to give it up amidst claims his request was denied because of his orientation.

As it turns out, Elton John and David turned to a surrogate mother to help them out, and the baby was born over the Christmas holiday, a rep for the couple confirms for Us Magazine.

“Sir Elton John and David Furnish have become parents to son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, the couple tells Us Magazine exclusively,” writes the publication.

“The baby boy, who was born Dec. 25 in California via a surrogate, weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces,” says the same mag. The identity of the mother has not been – and will not be – revealed to the public.

“A rep for the couple has stated that they intend to protect and respect the privacy of their surrogate, and will not be discussing any details relating to the surrogacy arrangements,” Us writes.

The same rep did carry, though, a message from the two, expressing their joy at being first-time parents.

“We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment,” John and David say in a joint statement. Though they don’t say so explicitly, it is believed the baby boy is already at home with his parents.

“Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents,” says the same statement.

As noted above, Sir Elton John and David Furnish were married in the UK in 2005, after 12 years together. In recent years, the singer has spoken about considering adoption, but dropped the topic after his request was so publicly denied.
