Surprise box office hit and critical success will be turned into a franchise

Hollywood does have a way of ruining all good little gems by dragging them out indefinitely, by ordering sequel after sequel after sequel. The same will probably happen to “Sinister” as well, as confirmation has come that a follow-up will be made.

“Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions is moving forward on its third micro-budget franchise with Sinister 2, the sequel to last year’s horror pic that grossed more than $87M [€66.9 milliom] worldwide off of a $3M [€2.3 million] budget,” Deadline reports.

“The move to build the Sinister franchise follows in the footsteps of Blumhouse’s successes with the Paranormal Activity and Insidious series of ultra-low-budget genre hits,” adds the same media outlet.

Telling the story of a family haunted by a super creepy and dangerous pagan deity, “Sinister” was a surprise hit both at the box office and with critics, who hailed it one of the best horror movies to come out since the first “Paranormal Activity.”

If what happened to the “PA” franchise (which is now considered a rather meritless milk cow after too many installments) is any indication, in a few years’ time, “Sinister” too will be just another fish in the pond, forgettable and unsurprising, even though it started off as a precious gem.
