India`s Jeev Milkha Singh won the China Open in Beijing on Saturday, thanks to a 70 score in the final round. He managed to reach 10 under, beating Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano by one shot. Singh now becomes the second Indian golfer - following Arjun Atwal - to triumph on The European Tour International Schedule.
The victory takes the Indian to the 14th place in the
European Tour Order of Merit. He was the first Indian golfer to qualify for the European Tour, in 1997. Since then, a series of wrist injuries kept him from playing at his true potential. The win in China comes more as an emotional triumph for 34-year-old Singh, who now wrote his name in the golf history books.
"I just can't explain this feeling, it's been a long seven years," said Singh, whose last Asian Tour victory came in Thailand in 1999. "I've let so many tournaments go in the last few years and went in to today with reverse psychology, thinking that if I didn't win it didn't matter," added the player.
He also referred to the period of time he was struggling with injuries: "When I was injured, I didn't know if I was going to come back in the sport. When I came back I wasn't thinking the same way. I was struggling, I was putting pressure on myself and I was getting down. And after that, you don't think right. I started working hard and the wrist became better and things started looking better for me. I've just won and it's one of the best feelings".
