Before the tabloids even got wind of the story, country singer and actress Jewel is confirming the happy news for People magazine: she and husband Ty Murray are expecting their first child.

In a statement for the celebrity magazine, Jewel says she first suspected she may be pregnant on her first day as a co-host on Bravo’s “Going Platinum.”

Because she wanted to prevent situations where she’d be sick on the set and have word of it get out to the press, she took a pregnancy test.

The moment she got confirmation, she found it very hard to keep the secret. Now, she and Ty are ready to share the happy news with the world and specifically the fans.

“I took a pregnancy test and it was positive! It was so hard to keep it a secret. I was worried I’d start throwing up on set and everyone would be like, ‘Oh, she’s pregnant’,” the 36-year-old singer says in the statement.

Jewel is now in her second trimester, which means she can officially announce the pregnancy. Useless to say, she and Ty are thrilled about the prospect of becoming first-time parents.

In the same statement, Jewel reveals she and Ty have been trying to have a baby ever since they married in the Bahamas in 2008. It wasn’t easy.

“I have always been a workaholic, so I had to learn how to slow down and take care of myself in a different way,” she says of trying to become pregnant.

Now that she is, she’s also making other changes in her life, like remodeling the Texas ranch to welcome the baby: they’re turning one of the guest rooms into a nursery.

“I’m trying to be in the moment and really enjoy my pregnancy. I feel really lucky,” Jewel adds.

While she’s enjoying her pregnancy, she’s also working on another children’s music album, her second after “Lullaby.”
