Last week, the news agency TMZ reported that Grammy-winning R&B singer Brandy had been involved in a very serious car crash on the 405 highway that resulted in the death of 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj. The California Highway Patrol has already recommended that she be prosecuted for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
The four-car pile-up apparently occurred because Brandy did not stop her SUV the moment she noticed that the traffic in front of her was slowing down. She was driving on the slow lane at 65 mph and, either because of a technical malfunction or because she wasn't paying attention, her car rear-ended the vehicle in front, sending it into another one.
By the force of the impact, the last car was sent sideways, careening into a different lane, where it halted after hitting the fourth vehicle. The drivers of both vehicles involved were taken to the hospital, one with minor injuries and the other in a serious condition. The next day, Aboudihaj, who was behind the wheel of the third car, died from major blunt force trauma.
When police arrived at the scene, Brandy was in shock but not harmed. No drugs or alcohol were found in her SUV and she wasn't displaying any signs of intoxication. Consequently, she gave the cops her account of how the accident happened and then she was released.
A CHP spokesperson said that they are almost sure the crash took place because of the singer's negligence, because she was 'just going too fast', which literally makes her 'the person at fault'. 'The office is currently reviewing the case and determining whether the evidence warrants the filing of a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter', a spokesperson for the attorney's office said today.
If found guilty, Brandy could face a maximum sentence of one year in a county jail and a $10,000 fine. When contacted for comment, Brandy's publicist refused to say anything about the pending charges.
