IDA says the Singapore government is preparing for the eventuality of cyberattacks

A few days ago, we learned that Anonymous hackers set their sight on the Singapore government, particularly the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA).

The hackers are displeased with the implementation of the internet licensing framework, which they consider a form of censorship. They’ve already hacked the website of the Straits Times newspaper for writing a “misleading” article about the hacktivist campaign.

Several government websites have gone offline over the past couple of days, but the IDA informs the public that the downtimes are a result of planned maintenance, not hacker attacks.

The organization’s representatives, cited by AFP, say they’re taking the threats made by Anonymous very seriously. Government agencies have enhanced IT security and they’re on “heightened vigilance.”

It remains to be seen if Anonymous hackers manage to penetrate any government websites. If not, they’ll likely resort to distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks to make their point.
