Warren Woodford announced last evening, March 4th, the immediate availability for testing of the second release candidate for the upcoming SimplyMEPIS 8.5 operating system. While SimplyMEPIS 8.5 RC1 was released in the middle of last week, the developers didn't have time to add any new features. They only fixed a few bugs reported by users. The SimplyMEPIS 8.5 RC2 release is ready for testing for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, and it includes:

· Linux kernel 2.6.32.8;
· X.Org 7.3;
· Support for EXT4 filesystems;
· KDE SC 4.3.4;
· Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6-2;
· OpenOffice.org 3.1.1-12;
· Google Gadgets 0.11.0-2;
· digiKam 1.1.0;
· Ghostscript 8.71;
· wl-modules 5.60.48.36.

"In the past week, we've fixed some bugs reported by the community and updated the MEPIS Assistants. And we've updated some packages containing bug fixes: digikam 1.1.0, ghostscript 8.71, kdebase-workspace 4.3.4-5 and wl-modules 5.60.48.36. The community is hard at work on translations, updated manual, and a couple of new utilities. I expect RC3 to be ready in a week or so. It should be the last RC before we go final with 8.5." - Warren Woodford said in the official press release.

SimplyMEPIS is a Linux distribution based on Debian Lenny. It features an LTS (Long Term Support) kernel and provides users with upgrades for all important packages. The MEPIS Assistant tools ensure that SimplyMEPIS can be used successfully in a desktop environment. There will be one more release candidate, available in one week, before the final and stable version of SimplyMEPIS 8.5 is launched!

It's a good looking operating system. I've been using the previous release candidate for a week now. I'm going to go ahead and switch off of 7 for this OS.
