14 DAY TRIAL // The final version of SimplyMEPIS 11.0 has been released after quite some time in the making. Going through several alpha and beta releases, the polished, stable result is now ready for anyone to install.
SimplyMEPIS 11.0 is based on the latest Debian 6.0 Squeeze stable release and comes with a KDE SC 4 desktop by default. However, it also bundles GNOME apps to make sure users get the best application for the job.
"Warren Woodford is pleased to announce the release of SimplyMEPIS 11, the latest version of the renowned SimplyMEPIS Linux operating system that is designed to be easy to install, easy to use, and easy to make your own," the release announcement reads.
"8 years ago, MEPIS created the first fully functional (what you see, is what you install) live CD and graphical installer. You only need to answer a few simple questions and within minutes you'll be ready to start using your new system," it adds.
SimplyMEPIS is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. It features a recent Linux Kernel 2.6.36.4 and comes with a relatively fresh KDE SC 4.5.1.
"The KDE4 desktop is endlessly configurable to match your personal preferences, and the additional software available from the Debian repositories assures you that the right tools for the job are at your fingertips with a few clicks in the Synaptic Package Manager," the announcement touted.
SimplyMEPIS 11.0 also boasts a solid selection of apps to help you do whatever you need right out of the box. LibreOffice 3.3.2 is included for all manner of office work, document editing, spreadsheets, presentations and so on.
The very latest Firefox 4.0.1 is also available, making sure that users get to enjoy all of what the modern web has to offer with great support for HMTL5, WebGL and other new web technologies.
For your multimedia needs, VLC 1.1.3 as well as Amarok 2.4.0 is included. Kdenlive 0.7.9, Digikam 1.9.0, GIMP 2.6.10 and InkScape 0.48.1 round out the main selection, but, with access to the Debian repositories, thousands of packages are only a few clicks away.
