Simplicity Linux, a Linux distribution based on Puppy that uses the LXDE desktop, is now at version 14.7, and the developers have released a number of flavors with it.

The developers of Simplicity Linux have based their system on Puppy Linux 5.7.1 and they have released a few flavors, which are pretty different from one another. As usual, the regular flavors are Obsidian, Netbook, and Desktop, but there is a forth one, which we haven't seen before. It's called Subdivision, and apparently, it's for people who don't like Windows.

This is a regular release for the Simplicity distro, and all users should find something useful in at least one of the flavors.

The first on the list is called Obsidian and is a very light version that features a minimal number of applications. It's designed for people who just want to use the Internet and it features little else, but apps can be installed from repositories.

“Obsidian is our cut down version, pretty much just Firefox 30, a network manager and not a lot else. If you just use your computer to browse the Internet and not a lot else, Obsidian is great,” notes the developer.

The second one is called Netbook and it's pretty self-explanatory. This is also a lightweight version of Simplicity and it's aimed at Netbooks. It features a small selection of apps, but users can also access quite a few cloud apps as well.

The developer has explained that “Netbook is our lightweight edition of Simplicity Linux. It has a few local apps, but most of the hard work is done by cloud based apps. It also features an assistant called Kai Says, which is a little like Siri.”

The Desktop edition of Simplicity Linux 14.7 is the beefiest of them all, and it integrates OpenOffice, Skype, Dropbox, and numerous other applications. Users will find that almost all the important software is present right from the start.

“If you're used to using Windows but it annoys you, Subdivision is designed for you. It comes with OpenOffice, Firefox, Java, Flash, and a Minecraft installer, so you can begin playing familiar games on Linux straight out the box.” This is what the developer says about the forth Simplicity Linux flavor, Subdivision, but it's not much different from the desktop edition.

All of the distributions mentioned above can be downloaded as hybrid Live CD ISO images (which means that all the changes you make will survive a system restart), and they can be written to a USB flash drive or any other media, like a DVD.

A complete list of changes, new features and other fixes can be found in the official announcement. You can download Simplicity Linux 14.7 right now from Softpedia.
