Simplicity Linux, a Linux distribution based on Puppy that uses the LXDE desktop, has reached version 14.4 and is now available for download.

The developers of Simplicity Linux released the previous development version of this distribution only a month ago and managed to implement a lot of changes and improvements. As usual, three versions of Simplicity have been made available.

“Simplicity Linux 14.4 is now available for download. It is based on the excellent Slacko Puppy 5.6.5, and uses LXDE as a desktop environment. There are three different versions this release cycle: Netbook, Desktop and X,” said the developer in the official announcement.

The Netbook edition of Simplicity Linux 14.4 is a flavor developed for those who don’t want too many features from an OS besides a simple Internet browser and a few other tools. Users will get access to Google Chrome as the default browser and they will be able to install Firefox from the official repositories. It’s also possible to customize the dock and to play various media files with the help of VLC, which can be also downloaded.

The main star of the Simplicity Linux 14.4 release is the Desktop edition, which has been designed to feature a large number of applications, but to remain lightweight at the same time.

“It also uses the LXDE desktop environment, and comes preinstalled with Dropbox, Chrome, Skype, LibreOffice, Thunderbird, and a more refined audio mixer. All these applications are available from the dock, making access easy. More applications are available via the application finder, and a large range of applications can be installed from the package manager,” the developer added.

The developers also released an experimental version called X 14.4, which makes use of KDE, Chrome, LibreOffice, Skype, Dropbox, and quite a few other packages. It's not intended to be used on a daily basis and users might encounter a number of problems. It's still considered to be a Beta build, so use it with care.

All of the distributions mentioned above can be downloaded as hybrid Live CD ISO image (that means that all the changes you make will survive a system restart) and they can be written on a USB flash drive or any other media, like a DVD.

A complete list of changes, new features, and other fixes can be found in the announcement. You can download Simplicity Linux 14.4 right now from Softpedia.
