Simplicity Linux, a Linux distribution based on Slacko that uses the LXDE desktop, is now at version 14.10 Alpha and it's available for download and testing.

The developers of Simplicity Linux have based their system on Slacko 5.9.3 and they are using the 3.15.4 Linux kernel. This kernel is one of the newest available and should provide adequate hardware support for the latest devices. Also, unlike previous releases in the series, the new version covers only two flavors, Netbook and Desktop.

The Netbook flavor is a simpler operating system, with fewer default applications and an accessible desktop experience. It's also a smaller ISO, so users won't need too much space for the actual size of the Linux distribution.

"As usual, Netbook is aimed at users who tend to do things online, but still want a pretty and professional looking desktop. It runs LXDE as the Window Manager, has Wbar as a dock, and comes complete with Firefox and TOR browser," reads the announcement.

The Desktop edition of Simplicity Linux 14.10 Alpha is a little bit bigger and it's intended to be a full desktop experience. This means that users will find most of what they need in an operating system already installed and ready for use.

"Desktop 14.10 Alpha is aimed at users who want a full featured desktop Linux. It comes complete with LibreOffice, WINE, Java, VLC and a host of other applications. As with Netbook, it also comes with Firefox and TOR browser built in, uses LXDE and Wbar," is also noted in the announcement.

All distributions mentioned above can be downloaded as hybrid Live CD ISO images (which means that all the changes you make will survive a system restart), and they can be written to a USB flash drive or any other media, like a DVD.

It's also possible to install the distributions, but these are still under development and users should use a separate partition or a testing PC. It should be stable enough, but it's not ready for daily use.

A complete list of changes, new features and other fixes can be found in the official announcement. You can download Simplicity Linux 14.10 Alpha right now from Softpedia. If you are going to test this latest version, you should consider doing it in a virtual environment, like VirtualBox, for example.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
