The team failed to take into account launch player numbers

SimCity seems to have solved its server side problems during the last few days, but the team working on the game at Maxis is still evaluating where the launch of the rebooted game went wrong.

Lucy Bradshaw, the leader of the Maxis development studio, is quoted by VentureBeat as saying that, “One lesson is that we needed longer, more comprehensive beta tests.”

The testing for SimCity was limited in time and it seems that the developers failed to adapt their infrastructure for the much bigger number of concurrent players seen during launch.

Bradshaw has also recently talked about the MMO-like structure of SimCity and about the way it will allow Maxis to deliver content and updates in the future.

Players have been asking Electronic Arts via petition to create an entirely offline mode for SimCity, but Maxis claims that a lot of engineering work would be required for the move.
