Video game publisher announces that its newest SimCity title has managed to sell 1.6 million copies since it was launched in March, with about 50 percent of the units linked to digital distribution via the Origin service.

The overall number is pretty impressive when taking into account the niche nature of the SimCity experience and the problems that the game had with its server infrastructure soon after launch.

SimCity requires a constant connection to the Internet in order to allow players to group with others to create regions and collaborate on complex regional projects.

Maxis is still working to bring the best out of the new city builder and, this week, players should get access to update 3.0, which is designed to once again try to tackle the complex problem of traffic.
