The always-on nature of the recently launched SimCity is central to the way the development team at Maxis envisioned the game experience and was not added because of pressure from the corporate side of publisher Electronic Arts.

Lucy Bradshaw, the general manager of Maxis, states on the official blog of EA that there are no secret plans to control players actions and that the entire game is designed to use an online component to enhance gameplay.

She adds, we designed this game with multiplayer in mind – using new technology to realize a vision of players connected in regions to create a SimCity that captured the dynamism of the world we live in; a global, ever-changing, social world.""

At launch SimCity was plagued by connectivity issues, with many buyers unable to play it, but the problems have been largely solved in the last few days.
