Microsoft has made available a new release of Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010. MIX10 brought with it a new development milestone of the Redmond company’s alternative to Adobe Flash. Silverlight 4 reached the Release Candidate stage the past week, and developers got a new Build designed to allow them to get ready for the imminent RTW (release to web) phase, which is scheduled for April 2010. Concomitantly with the new Release Candidate, the software giant made available for download the Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 RC.

Essentially, developers running the latest build of Visual Studio 2010, which coincidentally is also the RC, can now integrate an add-on and pre-requisite files with the platform, to streamline the building of Silverlight 4 and RIA Services applications.

“It can be installed on top of either Visual Studio 2010 RC or Visual Web Developer 2010 Express RC. It extends existing Silverlight 3 features and multitargeting capabilities in Visual Studio 2010 to also create applications for Silverlight 4 using C# or Visual Basic,” Microsoft stated.

Fact is that by downloading the Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 RC, devs will in fact get access to a number of components, including the Silverlight 4 developer runtime RC, Silverlight 4 SDK (software development kit) RC, the update for Visual Studio 2010 RC and Visual Web Developer Express 2010 RC (KB976272), Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 RC and WCF RIA Services for Silverlight 4 RC.

“Networking and data improvements that you might be interested in include: retrieving a socket cross-domain policy file from an HTTP address; enhancements to the out of browser full trust mode; full trust mode for using sockets without a cross-domain policy file; sending HTTP requests with the Accept-Language header; support for XPath expressions,” said Nicholas Allen, a program manager at Microsoft working on Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Silverlight, and other projects for the .NET Framework.
