Video game publisher Ubisoft and developer Blue Byte have announced that they are working on a new free-to-play and browser-based title, called Silent Hunter Online, which will soon enter closed beta stage and will be officially launched during 2012.

The two companies are promising a realistic and engaging submarine simulation which takes place in the Atlantic theater and is based on a dynamic campaign mechanics where players engage in asynchronous gameplay.

Every mission will also be available in coop mode and everything will be created using the new Flash 11 technology from Adobe, which enables 3D graphics in browser-based games.

Christopher Schmitz, who is the head of production at Ubisoft Blue Byte, stated, “This is the most innovative Silent Hunter experience ever created and we can’t wait to let our fans dive into the game.”

Blue Byte is best known for creating the recent Anno games and for taking over the Settlers series, which recently also made the move to the free-to-play online model.
