Actress says James Cameron has every intention of having her back

Though nothing has been confirmed in this sense, it seems a given that a sequel to James Cameron’s highly successful “Avatar” will arrive in theaters sooner or later, although fans would have it the former. Details on the project are still a bit sketchy but according to Sigourney Weaver, she too will return for the sequel, as SlashFilm confirms in a recent post.

The “Alien” star, who is one of the few female actresses to have had such a long and successful collaboration with Cameron, of whom they say he’s not the easiest director to work with, plays Dr. Grace Augustine in “Avatar,” as fans must already know. What makes the “announcement” that she’ll be returning so odd is the fact that Dr. Augustine dies at the end of the first film, which would leave only two options for the next film: a prequel or a sequel that brings the doctor back to life somehow.

“Sigourney Weaver appeared on the TV show ‘Le Grand Journal.’ The actress is in Paris this week to honor Harrison Ford during the Cesar Awards (the French equivalent of the Oscars). During her interview, Weaver was asked if she would be part of Avatar 2 and she made it clear that she has already talked about it with James Cameron, who is planning to include her in the sequel. But how is that possible?” SlashFilm asks.

“Anyone who has seen Avatar knows that Dr. Grace Augustine died from a fatal gun wound, and the attempt to transfer Grace from her dying human body into her unconscious avatar body [was] unsuccessful. So how can Weaver possibly be in the sequel? Remember, after Grace died, Mo’at declared that ‘she is with Eywa now.’ Weaver explained on the talk show that her character still exists ‘in the tree,’ and while she can’t promise anything, James Cameron has some ideas on how to keep ‘the family together’,” the movie-oriented e-zine says.

It’s admirable that Cameron is trying to keep the original cast together, it’s being said right now, but this shouldn’t happen at the expense of the story. While Sigourney put in a great performance as Dr. Augustine, if the famed director can’t bring her back in a way that doesn’t seem too far-fetched, then it’s perhaps better not to bring her at all, fans write on dedicated forums.
