All middle car drivers have to point at a board when they reach a station

People riding the subway in New York City have noticed that a tedious part of drivers' jobs is pointing at a small sign every time they reach the station.

This only applies to drivers in the middle cars, and they have to do it every time they pull into a station. As the video informs, there are 468 subway stations in NYC.

Apparently, pointing at the marking on the wall proves that they are paying attention, but I don't know who is paying attention to them when they are pointing.

Pranksters Yosef Lerner and Rose Sacktor have decided to brighten the day of some drivers by having signs of their own, all encouraging them to do the same – point at the board above. The experiment has drawn more than 120,000 YouTubers to their video.
