The Steam for Linux platform now features numerous games, but there still are too few major titles that can really shake things up. Now, it turns out that the rumor about the Linux version of Sid Meier's Civilization V might actually be true.

One of the major publishers out there that has expressed an interest in the Linux platform is 2K Games, although the sudden Linux love might be coming from the developer studio, Firaxis.

The rumors about Sid Meier's Civilization V and a Linux port date back from September 2013, when Valve used a number of known Windows-only games to illustrate the potential of its upcoming SteamOS and Steam Machine. One of the games looked like a title from Firaxis, although users could also see Rome Total War II.

To make it even more believable as a rumor, Civilization V and the latest XCOM games have been spotted on Amazon in the Linux category. Neither the studio nor the publisher made any comments about a potential port, a position that actually fueled the rumor.

In the meantime, Firaxis announced Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth, a successor for Alpha Centauri, and confirmed the fact that a Linux version was also in the works. So, why would players worry about Civilization V on Linux when a new title is already underway?

Sid Meier's Civilization V is considered by many to be the best in the series and it would be a great game to have on Linux. Now, the first details about a potential port have been spotted in the Steam database.

The information about the Linux version is taken from the Steam database, and by no means is it completely certain. The Steam database is a record of data that describes every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service.

Usually, the new entries are first visible in the Steam Database before their official launch, but there is no indication about a release date. Sometimes it can take even a few months until a game is launched for Linux.

Sid Meier's Civilization V was released back in September 2010 for Windows and it has already gathered 15 DLCs. A Mac OS version is available, ported by Aspyr Media. It's very likely that, if a Linux version ever makes it to Steam for Linux, the same company will take care of the porting process.
