Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, the latest title in the Civilization franchise, is finally coming to the Linux platform and the released date is tomorrow, December 18.

The Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth game was ported for Linux users by Aspyr Media, the same studio that also did the Mac OS X port and a number of other ones. They are starting to get some proper experience for the porting process and they even had great success with DirectX 11-only games, like Civilization: Beyond Earth.

For now, they have been commissioned to do the work by 2K Games, but they are already making a name for themselves and they will certainly get to release many more Linux games.

Aspyr Media kept the Linux users in the loop by posting all kinds of interesting news on their website. They encountered a number of problems with AMD and Intel hardware, and for a time it looked like they even thought about dropping the support for this hardware.

Fortunately, AMD and Intel engineers worked with the developers and the problems were solved in a matter of days. All the major GPU vendors are now supported and that is great news for Linux.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is the most complex game in the series

The guys from Aspyr Media said that they are planning to release the Linux version of the game before the holidays and it looks like they managed to pull it off.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is a very complex game and the developers from Firaxis have already released a major patch for it, which has already been integrated.

"The title this week is a bit of a misnomer, as we don’t really have any development updates since last week. What we do have, though? A release date for Linux! The Linux version of Civilization: Beyond Earth will be arriving worldwide this Thursday, December 18, at 12pm CST."

"If you haven't already, be sure to pre-order the game from GameAgent! Members can save 25% on their pre-order, and all customers that pre-order will be granted free access to the Exoplanets Map Pack. Pre-ordered Steam keys from GameAgent will be released at 12:00am CST, Thursday, December 18. (Please note that even if you have your Steam key in hand and redeem it via the Steam client, the game will not be available to download until 12pm CST)," reads the official blog.

The site mentioned GameAgent and that is digital service of Aspyr Media. You can buy the game from that service and you can redeem it on Steam. A review for the Linux platform is incoming.
