Aspyr Media this week released Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth in the Mac App Store with a $36.99 / €32,99 price tag, which the studio claims is a promotional price that shaves off 25% off for a limited time to celebrate the launch on the Mac App Store.

An all-new science-fiction take on the renowned Civilization franchise, Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is set in the future where modern society has collapsed and a new world order has been established.

The player’s mission

In Beyond Earth, players are left struggling to recover the human race. Nations have re-developed and have geared all their energy and know-how to achieve interstellar travel to move camp and establish a brighter future for our species. Aspyr Media, the primary publisher of video games in the Mac App Store, explains how the new sci-fi title will play out.

“As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people into a new frontier and create a new civilization in space. Explore and colonize an alien planet, research new technologies, amass mighty armies, build incredible Wonders and shape the face of your new world,” says the publisher.

A full-fledged strategy game at its core, Civilization: Beyond Earth involves making crucial decisions, such as choosing the sponsor and make-up of your colony wisely. These will affect the outcome of your journey to achieving peace and sustainability for your kind.

Mac users, check your specs

Aspyr warns that gamers shouldn’t get their hopes up for a multiplayer experience just yet. At the moment, the Mac App Store edition of Civilization: Beyond Earth is single player, but multiplayer will arrive as part of an update to the game.

The game won’t work with Steam Beyond Earth DLC and it doesn’t use Steam for encryption either. It’s also not supported on volumes formatted as Mac OS Extended (CaseSensitive), and a bunch of video cards are not supported. These include the ATI Radeon X1000 series, HD 2400, 2600, 3870, 4670, 6490, 6630, the NVIDIA GeForce 7000 series, 8600, 8800, 9400, 9600, 320, 330, GT 120, and Intel GMA chipsets, including HD 3000.

The absolute minimum requirements to achieve a decent gaming experience are 2.2 GHz CPU, 4 GB of RAM, 8 GB of free disk space, and a 512MB video card. To check if your specs match the game’s requirements, Aspyr offer the handy web tool at GameAgent.com that checks your Mac for you.
