Let there be notebooks

Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) is probably one of the best known mainstream and low-end components manufacturers in the world. They have always been present in all sorts of product categories, but mainly in motherboards , where they have been producing chipsets. Now it's time for SiS to expand their portfolio to some other markets, and they have, by designing, in collaboration with Clevo, the first SiSM671-based notebook in the world.

I remember saying some time ago that PC manufacturers, in fact, not only PC, but all computer components manufacturers use the same line when promoting their product, "my product is the best". Although some include small variations to the matter, such as "the best in its price range", "the best for gaming", "x percent more powerful that the competition", the mainstream manufacturers still go for the classic "the overall best product". You might think that years and years of marketing expertise would have taught them a thing or two, but I guess maybe that's what it's all about: flashing. No, not flashing the BIOS on your motherboard, but flashing a product's specifications so that it might "blindside" some unsuspecting consumers.

The newest trend is to promote your product as being "Vista Ready", add "the best" to the line, and you can consider yourself a true sales representative. Anyway, SiS has the same "problem". They have collaborated with Clevo to introduce their SiSM671/SiS968 chipsets onto the mobile market. The model they came up with is called Clevo M721S/M720S. It has a 12.1-inch LCD monitor and weighs 1.8kg, has UMTS/HSPDA support and a fingerprint reader for enhanced security. I think I've heard about these fingerprint readers, which I haven't had the chance to try yet, that they allow a user input to become available by entering Safe Mode, under Windows OS's. So much for security.

Clevo M721S/M720S supports Intel Core 2 Duo, Pentium 4 and Pentium D processors, DDR2 667/533 memory, up to 4GB; it uses a SiS Mirage 3 graphics engine, with DirectX 9.0 support, that's right 9.0, with Vertex Shader 2.0 and Pixel Shader 2.0. It also has PCI-Express x1 support, Serial ATA interface, 3xUSB 2.0, HDA and 10/100Mbps Ethernet.

Daniel Chen, President and CEO of SiS said: "Clevo M721S/M720S is the first SiSM671-based notebook PCs. It is light-weighted, sophisticated but definitely well-equipped. Therefore, we expect to see the spectacular sales success."
