Shuhei Yoshida, the leader of Sony Worldwide Studios, believes that the Wii U home console from Nintendo is still important for the video game industry because it gives newcomers an entry point with solid family experiences and interesting characters like Mario and Zelda.

NeoGAF quotes the executive as saying that his family owns two Wii U devices which he actually uses to play titles like the most recent Super Mario experience.

He adds, “Nintendo helps raise and teaches the fun of games to people just starting out. I think that's a very important thing in this industry.”

The home console has failed to generate the initial sales that analysts were expecting and Nintendo has failed to launch the kind of high-profile video games that could boost its figures.

It is also facing tough competition from the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft.
