Police in New Jersey are looking for a shooting suspect after officers responding to a call about a stolen vehicle got shot at by the robbers.

According to the Examiner, two men fired at deputies at Carneys Point on Wednesday, June 19. One of the suspects has been identified as 23-year-old Sabir Lynard and he has been detained.

A prosecutor with the Salem County District Attorney's Office informed that officers engaged in pursuing the suspects, who then crashed their vehicle and took off on foot. They were headed for a wooded area near the crash spot.

Lynard was injured in the fire exchange with police and gave himself in within half an hour, but his accomplice remained at large on Wednesday.

“This is an example of a trend where a dangerous job is getting more dangerous. [...] It was a situation where very easily there could have been one or more dead officers,” Prosecutor John T. Lenahan states.

According to NJ.com, he notes that police recovered “an assortment of evidence” on the scene, without specifying the make, model or caliber of the firearms used to shoot at law enforcement officers.

“It’s ironic we had a law enforcement recognition ceremony last week and emphasized the dangers officers face on a daily basis and six days later two of them are involved in essentially a gunfight on the site of the road,” he adds.

Two officers fired at the suspect but escaped the incident unscathed. They submitted themselves to a check-up at Inspira Health Network Woodbury.

“It was an incident that shows us how dangerous our jobs are on a daily basis,” DiGregorio said.

“We are grateful to all of the agencies that provided support and we thank God for keeping the officers safe. This could have been a tragic situation. Everyone acted in a professional and brave manner,” Carneys Point Township Police Chief Robert DiGregorio said.
