The developers at The Creative Assembly have talked some more about the naval battle mechanics in the upcoming Total War: Shogun 2, the strategy game which is set to be launched during March 2011 and is tasked with taking the series back to its gameplay and historical roots.
Gabor Beressy, one of the designers working on the game, says the game will be balanced to allow all vessels to engage and have a chance of winning against all others.
He says, “Two or three light bow ships can kill the archers on a heavy ship and burn it to the waterline with fire arrows from a safe distance. These bow ships, however, are really vulnerable to any kind of ranged or boarding attack, so you will lose one or two during the attempt.”
The evolution of history in
Total War: Shogun 2 means that naval warfare becomes more complicated later in the game.
Beressy adds, “Yes. We will have ships with matchlock crews, and Japanese and European ships with cannons. Maintaining these ships won’t be cheap, but will definitely be worth the money! Of course, if you don’t have access to gunpowder weapons you won’t be able to recruit them. But maybe you will be able to capture them!”
The naval battles are also affected by the introduction of land masses in the battle maps, which mean that players will get more opportunities to lure enemies into traps or use the terrain order to gain tactical advantages.
Of course, all of this requires a very capable Artificial Intelligence to handle issues for the computer and the developers at The Creative Assembly have said that they plan to only release Shogun 2 when the computer is capable of putting up a challenge.
Total War: Shogun 2 will deliver better graphics, new agents to use on the strategic map and heroes for the tactical battles.
