Wildfires started by workers who wanted to clear the land for crops are now wreaking havoc in Indonesia.

The air pollution caused by these forest fires has reached Singapore, Malaysia and several other regions, forcing people to seek shelter indoors and put on masks whenever they have to go outside.

Activists working with Greenpeace have recently released a series of photos showing just how bad the situation in Indonesia is. Some of these pictures are made available to you in the gallery below.

Mongabay reports that, since these wildfires hit Indonesia in mid dry season, it is likely that it will take several weeks before they quit burning and the air starts to clear out.

This is because some of the fires are located on peatlands (i.e. portions of land covered in partially decayed vegetation), and can only be completely put out by heavy rains.

Until the dry season ends in September or October, these peat fires will continue to burn. As they do so, noteworthy amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere.
