Shia LaBeouf gets more negative media attention than he (probably) deserves, but no amount of justified criticism for his erratic behavior can do away with the fact that he’s one of the most talented actors of his generation. The video for Sia’s “Elastic Heart” is proof of that.

Directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, and featuring choreography by Ryan Heffington, “Elastic Heart” features Dance Moms prodigy Maddie Ziegler (who is 12, by the way) and could be considered a prequel to last year’s “Chandelier,” which also featured Maddie.

This time, the father that was just an absence in “Chandelier” is present – and he’s played by Shia, at times with joy, at times with pain and most of the time with violence. Sia’s own relationship with her father was very problematic, so this is probably the best approximation we’re getting to what growing up for her was like.

Perhaps the most touching and powerful part of the video comes when the music stops, after a brief reconciliation between daughter and father, when Maddie steps out of the cage and Shia understands the time has come for him to let go. The wide range of emotions that show on his face in the span of just a few seconds is truly something to behold.

“Elastic Heart” is off Sia’s album “1000 Forms of Fear” and was also included on the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” OST. Check out the full video below.
