Executive producer breaks the happy news to fans on Twitter

One of the highest-rated shows now playing in the UK (and, with some delay, in the US as well) is “Sherlock” from BBC One, a modern spin on the classic novels of Conan Doyle. Fans needn't worry: a third season is also in the making.

The series has 2 seasons so far, each comprised of three 90-minute episodes. “Episodes” might be a bit of a stretch, since they're actually better than many Hollywood feature films and could function as standalone movies.

The finale of the second season ended with a huge cliffhanger which we're not about to reveal, just in case you haven't seen it yet.

If you did and would like to know more of the theories now circulating about what happened, see here.

Suffice it to say that the finale made some fans think that a third season would not be possible anymore, a belief further strengthened by Co-executive Producer Steven Moffat, who kept dropping hints about it on his Twitter.

Moffat has just set the record straight on where the show (mini-series) stands, tweeting to say a third season will also be made.

“#sherlock Yes of course there's going to be a third series – it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!” he wrote.

He doesn't offer more details about how writers will handle the events of the last episode of season 2, but that's partly why the show is so popular in the first place: it doesn't play by the rules.

“Sherlock” sees Benedict Cumberbatch as the highly intelligent Sherlock Holmes, while Martin Freeman plays Dr. John Watson.

All events take place in modern-day London, where the two have all the means of modern technology to solve cases, but only Sherlock possesses the insight to see all the details.

Season 2 has finished airing in the UK, but will premiere in the US in May.
