So, you have a favorite series on TV, you keep watching it over and over, and you keep up with every piece of news that pops up, just to be able to see when the next episode is coming. If you're a “Sherlock” fan, chances are that you'll really want the genius detective to have a relationship with his sidekick, doctor John Watson.

The Daily Star has talked with the show's co-creator Mark Gatiss and he has revealed that fans send him regularly material and letters fantasizing about how the two main characters develop a gay relationship. In fact, the show's creators have alluded themselves to this often, turning it into a running joke on the series.

You wouldn't imagine how many people would like to see Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock, and Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson, become lovers. Gatiss reveals, “Oh my God. I get sent things that would make your hair turn white. It’s not just Sherlock and Watson holding hands on a park bench, I can tell you that.”

The co-creator adds that “Some of them are incredibly graphic but my goodness I’ve not tried half the things they’re doing.” But he admits that he takes the blame because he has introduced this idea in the show himself.

He reveals how he and Steven Moffat, the other person responsible for the show on BBC, first sat down to watch the Billy Wilder film from the 1970s, they got the idea from a scene in which “Sherlock is asked to father a child with a Russian ballerina and gets out of it by claiming he and Watson are a couple. We took that and went with it.”

Little did they know that their little joke would turn into a worldwide phenomenon and that people would be actually rooting for the two protagonists to become more than just partners in crime-busting.

Now, Gatiss has to raffle through tons of explicit photos of the two actors every day, sent from gay fans all over the world who take time out of their day to imagine how Cumberbatch and Freeman would look together kissing or sharing an intimate embrace.

It's not known if the creators are going to use some of this lewd material for inspiration in the next season, but one thing is clear, the gay jokes aren't going to stop. The boys' landlady, Mrs. Hudson, is likely to continue to make references to the two of them being together in “that” way.

You'll have plenty of time to decide if you'll want Sherlock and Watson to become lovers or not, because there is still some time to wait until the next season even starts filming. Season four has just been commissioned at the beginning of July but won't air until late in 2016.
