The Sherlock Holmes series from Frogwares continually shows signs of improvement. The newest trailer hints at the possibilities players have regarding the investigative direction they take and the moral choices available once cases have been solved.

While The Testament of Sherlock Holmes brought players better graphics, a complex, immersive story and a challenging investigative experience, the upcoming installment threatens to offer even more impressive graphics, much more demanding virtual detective work and more freedom on pursuing cases.

The upcoming Crimes and Punishments will present players with a total of 7 mysteries to solve. Logical deduction and a careful analysis of available clues will single out the culprit among the many suspects in each case; but if certain trails are overlooked, you may end up putting an innocent person behind bars.

Players will be confronted with the difficult choice of following the letter of the law or their own moral compass, and their decisions will have repercussions during the course of the game.

Crimes and Punishments marks the very important decision the developers have made to switch from their in-house engine to the Epic Unreal Engine 3, allowing for a much richer rendering of both characters and environments, as Gamezone reports.

Changing the game engine has allowed the team to focus on developing the game's mechanics, allowing new investigation techniques that will offer fans a more immersive experience.

The new game mechanics attempt to bring players the experience of being Sherlock Holmes, exploiting the incredible observation and inference gifts of the legendary detective.

Players will be able to re-create a past event by studying the key features of a crime scene and will be able to guess the particularities of certain individuals' lives by simple observation.

Crimes and Punishments is scheduled for release in mid-2014, for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
