Shell is eager to highlight the vital role played by innovation and technology in delivering energy to power people's lives via a free iPad application called Inside Energy.

The app itself has been around since November 2011, but Shell has kicked off a campaign to promote the app this week. Inside Energy will be featured as an ad inside the apps of the BBC, the Economist and the Daily over a period of several weeks, Shell confirmed today.

This Shell app explains how the company processes and distributes the natural gas and oil found thousands of meters below the Earth’s crust “as you swipe down from a 3D platform into the murky depths below.”

It offers an interactive collage that teaches viewers about the processes that go into making stuff like pillows and plastic bottles, as well as videos, animations and photo galleries.
