Britney Spears has left the posh rehabilitation clinic today, her publicist confirmed in a press release. The singer was admitted into the luxury establishment on February 22, after her mother and estranged husband reportedly staged an intervention and threatened her with taking her two children away from her.
Ever since November, when the former pop star filed for divorce from wannabe rapper Kevin Federline, Britney's life began to be tabloid material. Sure, it's not as if she tried to make it harder for the paparazzi: crazy nights out, eventually without any underwear in sight, hanging out with Hollywood's wild girls Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, at least a bunch of heavily mediated and very short-lived amorous relationships with guys who took the first opportunity of selling their stories, photos in which she seemed intoxicated, rumors about alcohol and drug binges, you name it.
After she tried on two separate occasions to seek help for some unnamed problem, Britney was finally admitted to Promises, one of the poshest rehab centers in the US. With previous 'alumni' like Diana Ross, Ben Affleck and Matthew Perry, Promises is like the mother of all rehab clinics. And the price matches the reputation: the minimum stay there is said to cost an estimated $48,000, a sum that Britney willingly paid not to lose her two sons.
While Spears was in rehab, the rumor machine was as busy as before. OK, maybe not quite but still... There were rumors about Britney running wild through the patients' rooms, with the number 666 painted on her forehead and screaming that she was the Antichrist. There was talk of a new romance, with some tennis man and then, when people grew tired of it, of another one, this time with an unknown singer. The media wrote about her wanting to get out, while her fans were busy with writing get-well messages on her official website.
'Britney Spears has been released by the Promises Malibu Treatment Center after successfully completing their program. We ask that the media respects her privacy as well as those of her family and friends at this time.', Larry Rudolph, Britney's manager said. These are the words that will start a new avalanche of rumors and implausible stories, the kind you've never heard before. Until that happens, let's hope that Britney will be doing just fine, now that she dealt with whatever it was that was bothering her.
