The new Sharp phones will start selling in Japan soon

A few months ago, we showed you a video that was shot using a phone powered by MediaTek MT6795 chipset that was able to shoot in super slow-motion 1080p video at 480fps. But what if we told you that Sharp has come up with a nifty slow-motion gimmick?

According to a new report, Sharp’s new Aquos Zeta, Aquos Xx and Aquos Series smartphones can play video at 2,100 fps.

There’s a little subtlety here that needs to be explained. The phones can’t actually record video at 2,100 fps, as the MediaTek phone can at 480 fps.

The company uses a setup that allows its devices to shoot at 210 fps in 845 x 480 pixel resolution. Sharp then uses a software solution to playback the video as if it were a 2,100 fps video. Pretty sneaky, huh?

There’s also the alternative of shooting 1080p video at 120 fps and then having the phone playback the result at 1,200 fps.

Sharp offers a pretty unique feat with its new phones

The software basically superimposes copies of the original frames in order to put together the super slow-motion playback. Nevertheless, you’ll probably achieve a greater level of detail using a camera that can actually shoot at that level.

Sharp's newest phone is the Aquos Xx, which arrives with a 5.7-inch display with 1080p resolution and a Snapdragon 810 under the hood. The device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop and offers the services of 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card).

The 13 MP camera on the back has been certified by famed camera manufacturer Ricoh, and with Sharp’s slow-motion software bundled on the inside, it certainly makes for an interesting snapper.

Sharp’s new phones that come bundled with these capabilities will soon be made available in Japan in the upcoming weeks and will be eligible for purchase via the country’s main mobile networks, including NTT DoCoMo, Softbank and KDDI.

As is the case with most smartphones produced by Sharp, the Aquos Zeta, Aquos Xx and Aquos Series won’t probably make it out on the US market. But maybe third-party retailers will pick them up at some point.
