Police records have revealed Sharmeka Moffitt, alleged victim of a brutal KKK attack, in which she suffered third-degree burns on more than half of her body, inflicted the wounds on herself.

According to the Franklin Sun, evidence processed from the scene proves that the woman set herself on fire.

The State Police Crime Lab analyzed fingerprints from a cigarette lighter and lighter fluid container, which were recovered in the wooded area around the crime scene, and recovered a match. The fingerprints belong to Sharmeka Moffitt, alleged victim of a hate crime.

"All of the evidence is pointing back to the victim inflicting this upon herself. [...] No evidence has shown any other person was involved," Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas stated.

Police officers had originally dubbed the assault as a hate crime, as the woman's car had been defiled with the letters "KKK" and racial slurs.

Sharmeka Moffitt is currently in hospital care, with burns covering over 60 percent of her body. No charges have been filed against Moffitt at this time.

"My heart truly goes out to the Moffitt family, who are more than just members of our community, they are my friends. [...] I hope we can come together as a community and pray for their wellbeing and a quick recovery of Sharmeka," Chief Thomas stated.

"Although I think what she did was wrong and had major consequences not only for her, but throughout our community and our country. There's something wrong here, and we need to help individuals like this. In the same way our community came to support her as a victim, I still hope the community will support her emotional and physical recovery," he added.

The woman's family were shocked to find out the truth behind Sharmeka's attack, the Inquisitr reports.

"Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter’s injuries. While this is not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies," the woman's family said, in a statement.
