Shakira and Gerard Pique have been an item since spring 2010, but it is only recently that their romance became the subject of speculation and rumors saying that it might verge on the abusive. This happened because of a series of comments Shakira made to the press – but she’s setting the record straight now.

The Colombian singer has a new music album to promote and, though she’s usually very media-shy, she did open up a bit in recent interviews about her relationship with the soccer star, their baby and their family life.

Among the most mediated things she said was that she wasn’t allowed to shoot music videos with men anymore because Gerard was extremely jealous and territorial (so she was only allowed to have women in her videos), and that they were “one of those asphyxiating couples.”

The most recent round of tabloid reports even said that Gerard was jealous at how carefree she was around Adam Levine, who was also on the panel of judges / mentors on NBC’s The Voice, and that he planned to “keep an eye” on Adam so that he didn’t misbehave.

In other words, things got really out of control because of Shakira’s comments, and she came to be represented in the press and in the blogosphere as some kind of doormat, a woman who has no say in her life with Pique, and who must do whatever he asks of her even at those times when it’s her career on the line, like was the case with her choice for cameos in music videos.

This is a lie, the singer says in a post on her Facebook account, meant to set the record straight once and for all.

“Hey guys - I recently said in some interviews that my man could be territorial. For the record, I was being humorous and now I see that some press took it very literally! The reality is that we have a beautiful relationship of mutual trust, and jealousy has never been an issue on either side,” Shakira writes.

“Next time I promise, I'll be more careful when attempting to use my sense of humor, as clearly it can be easily misinterpreted!” she adds.

So there you have it: fans worried that their idol was being told what to and what not to do, and that she was living in fear of her man, need not be worried anymore, because she’s just fine thankyouverymuch.
