From the writer of Street Fighter

Doom was a flop, both critically and financially. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li was an embarrassment for both the actors starring and those who produced the movie. Max Payne strayed so far from the videogame it was inspired from as to be unrecognizable by a gamer (and what did they do to Mona Sax?). Given the above statements, it's unclear why someone would try to again adapt a successful videogame franchise for the movie screen.

We might never know why, but it seems that Sony Pictures is interested in turning one of the biggest cult hits of the PlayStation 2, Shadow of the Colossus, into a movie. Variety reports that Kevin Misher is set to produce the title. His previous experience includes blockbusters like The Scorpion King and The Interpreter. He is also involved in a new adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune.

The potential bad news is that the script for the Shadow of the Colossus movie is being put together by Justin Marks, the one who produced the rather absurd and incoherent Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. Of course, a bad movie cannot be blamed on just one man, but he probably had quite a significant contribution.

From the Variety report, it seems that the basic structure of the videogame will be kept in the movie, even though some of the characters that lack much of a description will be better developed and will get more screen time. The producers consider the project as something that might prove as popular as the screen version of The Lord of the Rings.

Getting a producer and script writer doesn't mean that the Shadow of the Colossus movie will ever get to screens. The project is still in its early stages. Let's hope that the people working on it have played Shadow of the Colossus and understand what made that videogame special.
