Ueda shares his thoughts

Video games have certainly evolved over the years, thanks to the fact that some of them have even been considered art, for their rich story, novel gameplay mechanics and the overall experience that was delivered to the player.

Two such titles, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, were created by designer Fumito Ueda, who now talks about another two that have been considered peaks in terms of quality for the current generation of games: Grand Theft Auto IV and Super Mario Galaxy.

While speaking about the blockbuster creation of Rockstar Games, Ueda reveals that “the biggest problem with the game is the lack of innovative things in the game. The graphic style impresses, but not the base premise, which is exactly the same as the predecessors.” It definitely seems that ordinary people who live a life of crime isn't exactly to Ueda’s liking.

As regards Super Mario Galaxy, he says that he heard Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of almost all of the Italian plumber's adventures, drew inspiration from the boss battles featured in his older games, like Shadow of the Colossus. But while a lot of people applauded SMG, Ueda wasn't as satisfied.

“Yes I have played it, it was hard not to since it was rumored that Miyamoto-san was inspired by me. But I had expected more, that segment, was like the rest of the game not so fun as it could [have] been. I think the fans made a big deal out of nothing when they said Miyamoto had stolen from me. The thing I am critical over isn’t that they didn’t borrow anything that isn’t unique for my game, but that they didn’t make more fun stages out of it,” he said.

It definitely seems that Ueda is very hard to please. Hopefully this will mean that the next creation from the Team Ico leader, The Last Guardian, will certainly deliver the best experience of this current generation in terms of story and gameplay. Until 2010 though, we still need to keep busy with other games.
