Sexy and Un-Sexy Oscar Fashion

Some of the evening's fashion ups and downs

This year's Oscars were definitely a success - and I'm saying that in more ways than one. First of all, they were barely saved form going the same (horrendous) way as the Golden Globes, and that always adds to the charm of a glamorous evening, right? Also, there was a nice opening monologue and a relatively surprising line-up of winners, not to mention loads of excellent and not so excellent fashion we can sink our teeth into, and which (in my humble opinion at least) can satisfy even the crankiest appetites. I decided to put together a selection in which I've included what I felt were some of the most successful red carpet appearances of the evening, as well as some of the hit-and-miss ones. It's purely personal taste, and I'd be more than happy to hear your own thoughts on the stars' fashion choices and whether they managed to convince you or not.

In the "Best" section, I would definitely mention Heidi Klum's wonderful red dress by John Galliano. The fact is, I saw this dress mentioned as a "miss" on many other sites, but I honestly can't see why, except for the fact that there is an arguably large amount of fabric that went into it. Katherine Heigl also went for a red silk dress (by Escada), and it looked stunning on her. She did overdo her make-up a tiny bit, but on the whole she managed to pull off a stunning appearance. My personal favorite was Penelope Cruz, who sported a Chanel dress (with feather detail at the bustline)accessorized with Chopard diamonds and a Roger Vivier clutch.

I know many of you didn't like the feathers, but I think she managed to pull the whole look off nicely and with a lot of style. Helen Mirren again pulled an impeccable appearance, and Hilary Swank's black yet refreshingly sexy and sweet dress made her one of the most appreciated appearances on the red carpet.

As for the "not so hot" section of my post, I must say I wasn't convinced by Jessica Alba's Marchesa dress (accessorized with Cartier diamonds). The color was lovely, but the feathered detail at the top really managed to ruin the whole look in my opinion. I won't even comment on Diablo Cody's leopard print dress and exposed tattoo, because I think you'd end up calling me things like 'mean" and "cruel". Finally, Jennifer Hudson managed to make her breasts look completely unnatural in her white dress, while Tilda Swinton's amazing talent may have won her an Oscar, but it sure did nothing for her eccentric fashion taste. Check out the photos below, and stay tuned for more fashion updates - coming soon.
