Bug affects Calendar app, causes users to miss appointments

There’s a major flaw in iOS 8 that Apple has failed to address since the debut of the operating system in September. It affects calendar events and appointments, and has caused numerous customers to flee and install third-party solutions.

Pre-installed on all iDevices, Apple’s Calendar app has been a pain in the neck for numerous customers who used to rely on this tool for appointments. Because of a bug that Apple has failed to address, the Calendar app uses conflictual time zone data that causes saved events to scramble, or fail to ring.

Apple doesn’t seem to care

A thread on Apple Support Communities (the company’s official discussion forum) titled “iOS 8 Calendar on iPhone showing GMT times for new events” has been viewed more than 225,000 times since September 21, and has nearly 600 replies. The topic is also 40 pages long.

Most users have similar stories to share. The flaw basically causes any appointment created in Calendar to fetch the time zone setting of the user’s account (such as Exchange or Google). This has caused many iDevice owners to stop using Apple’s first-party Calendar app and employ the help of a third-party solution. There are quite a few calendar apps in the iTunes Store, so there’s definitely no shortage of options for those affected by the flaw. But it’s embarrassing for Apple to leave a flawed Calendar app in iOS for this much time.

The company hasn’t commented on this issue, nor has it left any clues that it plans to address it in an upcoming iOS release. Apple is known to be testing iOS 8.1.3 and iOS 8.2 internally.
