The agency took the time to respond and encourage him to "reach for the stars"

Perhaps the days of every boy dreaming up to be an astronaut aren't over after all. For a time, during the space race's heydays, astronauts captured the world's imagination. But as budget cuts made missions less and less spectacular, interest veined.

Space exploration hasn't stopped, obviously, but we haven't even gone to the moon in decades, let alone somewhere further.

There have been some signs that NASA is finally thinking about targets beyond low Earth orbit, places like Mars.

The agency hasn't actually decided anything yet, but it may already have found its first astronaut for the Mars missions.

Seven-year-old Dexter wrote to NASA volunteering to go to the red planet. He was realistic though and knew he couldn't just yet, but he did ask for tips on becoming an astronaut.

Thankfully, the agency wrote back urging him to get good grades in school, go to space camp, and find out more about what NASA does. Dexter's mother posted the original letter and the response on Imgur.
